How does acupuncture work

Acupuncture is a very old method of treatment. It is based upon ancient Chinese medicine. According to this treatment, the body is made of yin and yang. These are two opposites. While yin represents cold, dark and female, yang represents warm, light and male. These two interact and form a vital force called as Qi. This energy is essential in a body. The movement of Qi within the body is by means of invisible channels that are called as meridians. There must be an exact balance between the yin and the yang in the body otherwise it leads to illness. Acupuncture is one of the methods to restore this balance.

The body is believed to be aligned to five elements. Every part of the body is believed to ‘breathe’ and this is mandatory for balancing all the five elements. Breathing occurs through the acupuncture points. Some of these points are believed to be very closely aligned to an element. There are also times when the air coming in from one of these points reacts adversely with the air coming in from another point. The air comes in randomly from all directions. This is called as destructive cycle. Otherwise it supports each other and is called as creative cycle.

The da chi sensation is a significant sensation that a person feels when a person is undergoing acupuncture therapy. The feeling of da chi comes through a person’s fingers. Sometimes the body needs to be tonified and sedated so as to get the best effect. This can be done with the help of needles. These needles are then either turned in the clockwise or in the anticlockwise direction to get the desired result. The time when a person has to stop turning the needles have to be felt because at that time the flow of chi is maximum.

The acupuncture points are the points where there are maximum chances of a person obtaining the da chi effect. These points can be accurately identified only by a licensed practitioner. There is a different sensation that a person receives after he undergoes acupuncture. This may either last for 3 -7 days or even much longer. The different points of acupuncture have to be operated in different combinations for curing different diseases. Acupuncture is a method that is used to cure conditions such as asthma, rheumatism, migraine, headache and even coma. Acupuncture can be used in combination with the principles of western medicine to achieve better results. As a result of technological advancements, there are newer methods of acupuncture such as laser acupuncture.
